Guide to Hacking
Whether you're trapped in maints, a shifty Syndicate, or just a Greytide looking to mess around hacking is a great way to force open various doors to get where you need to go. Be careful though you might anger the Janitor or get in trouble with the Head of Security.
How to hack
Hacking has a risk of getting shock, ruining the door, or even getting arrested. It's a good idea to run to the tool closet at the start of the round and try to get the Insulated Gloves before anyone else as these will protect you from shock. If you can't get proper Insulated Gloves any Budget Insulated Gloves should work but even without those you'll live without any gloves (you just might end up a bit twitchy). To avoid any prying eyes you'll want to find a secluded spot to start hacking, a good place would be somewhere in the Maintenance Tunnels if you want to avoid getting caught or ruining any important doors. You'll only have to try one door before you know which wire to cut everytime as the wire colours do the same for every door per round (the order the colours are in will be random per door however).
Before you get to hacking any kind of door you'll need 3 essential tools to get it done. A screwdriver, wire cutters, and a crowbar.
Steps to hacking:
First use your screwdriver on any door, simply clicking on it with a screwdriver with hand will open the cable panel.
To access the wires click on the door with the opened cable panel with the wire cutters.
There will be a bunch of wires connecting to different coloured outlets, start by cutting some wires and testing the door. Every wire has a function so when you test one cut wire try replacing it back and trying to next and repeating.
Eventually you'll cut a wire and when testing the door it'll say "Airlock is unpowered." Click on the airlock now with your crowbar and it eventually be pried open. (If this does not happed it means the door is bolted shut and you'll have to find another door to try on.)
What the wires do:
Wire | Description |
---|---|
Power | This wire provides power to the door. When cut you can open the door with a crowbar. |
Shock | When cut, the door shocks anyone who interacts with it without insulated gloves. |
Bolt | When cut, the door becomes bolted shut and cannot be opened again unless you have a remote or bolt card. |
Pressure Warning | When cut, the door will play a pressure warning when trying to open. |
Prevent Bolt | When cut, this wire will prevent the bolt from falling. (Won't work if bolt already activated.) |
Prevent Shock | When cut, this wire will prevent shocking from occuring. |
Force Close | When cut, the door will try to force close. |
Close | When cut, the door will try to close. |
Bump | When cut, the door will open when clicked on not when walking into it. |
AI | This wire controls AI interaction with the door. When cut, the AI can no longer interact with the door. |
Figuring out the door wiring can take a minute or two initially, but it's well worth the time investment, as a working pattern can be repeated with additional doors in seconds.
